Learning to Paint “En Plein Air” with Christine Dupuis

August 10 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 9:30am on Thursday, repeating until August 10, 2017

- $90 - $110

PLEIN AIR means “the experience of painting outdoors in the landscape”. The practice goes as far back as the French impressionistic painters in the 1800’s. The North Fork is a beautiful place to spend a day in nature and learn how to express the essence of summer on a canvas! Artist, Christine Dupuis, will guide you through a 3 session introductory course on learning to chase the light and capture the magic of the outdoors through art.

Class Specifics:

This class is for the advanced beginner to intermediate artist looking to develop their skills and venture out to paint in the picturesque settings of Historical Hallockville farms.

Students will learn to see colors and shapes within the landscape as well as observing light and shadow patterns from the sun. They will learn how these patterns are put into a composition.

Basic paint color palettes will be laid out and discussed using warm and cool tones to establish “color temperatures”

A “grisaille”, will first be executed as an under-painting, later followed by adding colors. A Grisaille is an oil sketch usually done in one color, usually a brown or gray tone which helps to establish the initial painting.

There will be demonstrations as well as individual attention given to every student.

Supply list will be emailed to you upon registration. Weather permitting students will be working outside. Alternate spaces in the farm will be available in case of in-climate weather. Advance registration is required. Appropriate for ages 16 and up.

$90 for members/ $110 for non-members

Artist Bio:

Christine Dupuis grew up on Long Island New York and now resides in the beautiful and picturesque North Fork of the eastern end of the Island.

Christine started drawing and painting early in her life and was mostly self-taught until she began her art education as a young woman at The Huntington Arts Council, East End School of the Arts and Long Island Academy of Fine Arts. Christine has also studied portraiture with Kevin McEvoy Studios in East Islip. The training she received is that of the Old Masters using techniques in the naturalist tradition.

Christine says there is something addicting about painting in the great outdoors. “Everything becomes a painting” in the artist’s eyes.

You may see her as you are driving by the beach, a farm stand, at the edge of a road near a flower field or an by old barn building. She is emotionally drawn to her subject whether it is because of the atmospheric light or the colors reflecting on the earth. Capturing the essence of her surrounding is most important.

Christine also organizes a group of Plein Air Painters that meet weekly at various locations to paint the great outdoors. You might find her at the edge of a road near an old country barn, by one of the beautiful beaches that surrounds Long Island, or in a garden full of flowers…paint brush in hand and in her glory!
